This is Megan Brain's Mentor. Leo Monahan mentored Megan during her studies at Chouinard School of Art in Pasadena. Leo started his career as a graphic designer and later leaned more towards the fine arts. I thought it would be interesting to look at both the student and the mentor.

Paper Sculptor

These are some of the paper sculptures of Megan Brain. She does a good amount of client based work with such companies as Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon, Dick Blick, Dreamworks and Disney Imagineering. I'm drawn to the flowers the most because of the color palettes and composition. Those two would look lovely on the wall next to my desk.

Toys

A group of my friends are participating in an event called, Designers In Toyland, where they get to build a toy from scratch, choose an existing toy and take it to another level, or paint a blank vinyl toy. I decided to look up some toys for fun. This is just a couple of interesting ones I found.

This two toys above are both made out of paper. I know a dog just like that.

This one is made all out of wood, it was my favorite of the bunch. Super simple, but alot of character.

Possibilities of Print

This artist specializes in Printed Textiles and works with the idea of "re-use", "re-flect", and "love what belongs to us". Zoe Murphy's use of material, color and pattern has opened my eyes back up to the different possibilities of design.

Gastrotypographicalassemblage

Thanks to a comment left on my previous post on "Presentism" I looked into something called "Gastrotypographicalassemblage" by a designer named Lou Dorfsman. The name of the piece is intriguing in itself, but once I laid my eyes on this beauty I completely understood why it was suggested to me. It was originally designed by Dorfsman for the CBS cafeteria during the mid-1960s, only to be taken down 20 some years later to make room for change. Luckily, The Center for Design Study got its hands on it years after that and took on the great job of restoring this incredible icon of design.

A good friend of mine turned me on to this artist, Jacob Magraw-Mickelson. The way he uses color to create such vivid organic forms is just awesome. It's watercolor and gouache on paper.

I was doing some research on logos and decided to reference back to Paul Rand. I knew he was the designer that created identities for companies such as ABC, IBM and Westinghouse (just to name a few). What I didn't know of were his other works. Such as these pieces. Where have I been!

I love patterns and this guy (Blaine Fontana) uses them well. That's all I have to say. Well actually thats not all, some of his works reminds me of Sam Flores a bit. Check his site out and see for yourselves. Now that's all I have to say.

Tokyo Contrast

I came across these paintings last night. I found them to be really interesting. The artist, Ryuichi Orgino, was born in Tokyo and studied at CCA ( California College of Arts). I think that the way he combines three very different pieces into one is striking. I really like the ghost one.

That's Goldsworthy

I was introduced to the works of Andy Goldsworthy a couple years back by one of my Professors and instantly grew fond of his artwork, but even more fond of his process. The documentary Rivers and Tides shows Goldsworthy working on some of his creations as well as showing how he works with nature to create his incredible pieces.
